Dear friends

Lately, we have been informed about a new twist in the affairs of Patha Bhavana - an advertisement taken out in local papers, by VBU, about employment of some 40 additional teachers. According to some, there is no urgency for this step right now, and the way this is being processed is likely to hurt long term well being of the school. The selection is supposed to follow a multi-tiered qualification requirement, where some of the teachers would need only to be school passed, while others are to be BA/MA or PHD. Such a system of segregation has apparently not been used in PB before. It is alleged that such a system would further lower the quality of people recruited and make the job of PB following PB's functioning based on Tagore's ideals more difficult. It has also been hinted that the reason behind this move might not be from any genuine concern for PB's well being.

We are also told that the next step to come might be to change the syllabus and curriculum for PB, to follow the central Govt school blueprint, further erasing traces of a rounded holistic character of the school.

It has been suggested that the ex-student diaspora as well as well wishers of the institution and believers of Tagore's educational vision, who are perceived to be unbiased, with no personal axe tog grind and having genuine good faith in Tagore's educational vision, might be best positioned to highlight this problem to the right bodies, and bring at least a temporary stay on the recruitment process so time is allowed to think this through.

Further, we have been told that there is no real pressure from the Government for VBU to proceed with this recruitment drive, but that is is happening mainly by initiative of the University itself.

This is the basics we have so far learned, to the best of our understanding.

I discussed this briefly with Tapas da and Piyali over phone and face to face with Tan Lee da, Leena di, and Ila di (Leena di's elder sister now visiting Vancouver). Myself, Piyali and Tapas da also spoke separately with Bodhirupa (Principal, PB) and Kishore (president, Adhyapak sabha) in Santiniketan.

As a result of all these talks, a suggestion has been aired by Tan Lee da and also some of us - to consider arranging one or two free talk conference calls on this topic, to check what some of us feel as a possible solution to the long term progress of PB and survivability of Tagore's original idea of education through PB, to be possibly circulated as a written document as well as aired through podcasts, to raise awareness and check if there is anything more specific we could do in this regard.

Tan Lee da, Leena di and Ila di seem agreeable to speak their minds, and same time hearing others points of view. Kishore appears agreeable to speak his views and offer a few suggestions. Piyali too is agreeable. Kishore says he would ask a few elders of Santiniketan, such as Supriyo da (Tagore) and Somen da (Bannerjee) etc, if they might like to offer their views on record.

This email is an invitation you, if you all might also like to join and contribute with fresh views or suggestions. Depending on the feedback on this email, we might select a date and time, or perhaps multiple dates/times, to accommodate all. If there are others that might also contribute, please mention their names too.

Within my limited capacity, I offer the platform of the podcast to this effort.

If you do not feel comfortable or qualified to join the proposed free talk, please ignore this email. If you are interested, please revert.

Thanking you
Tonu

This is very important & I would like to take an active part. Please take it furher to give a proper shake to the cause of it - the best homage we can pay to Gurudev on the year of his 150th Birthday.

Well, there has been a chain of emails relating to this issue. Here is a basic recap. Anandarup da, Chiku di, Tuku di, Piyali, Tukul, Tapas da and myself have basically agreed to speak about it on one or two conference calls. Kishore too has agreed to speak on it, and ask others if they would agree to voice their opinion to us, either on record or off record.

Sotuda feels we should check the Vice Chancellors view too, to get a balanced opinion on it. I shall try calling RKR my Saturday night, his Sunday morning. On a parallel effort Piyali too will try from her end.

Tuku di suggested a conf call Sunday.

I am able to arrange a conf call my early morning Sunday. I am out of home for the rest of the day. If that time slot is not convenient, perhaps Tapas da or someone else can arrange it later in the day without me.

Thats it for now

I can initiate a Conference call from Chester at a suitable time for everybody & Tonu can join later but then again his presence is necessary for recording for putting it on Podcast.
