Most of us are aware of fingerprint or iris verification in the international airports, borders or other high-security zones. Fingerprint/iris are the methods for uniquely recognizing an individual. All such intrinsic physical or behavioral traits that can be used for human identification are known as 'biometrics'.

Physical biometrics:

face
fingerprint
iris
retinal scan
DNA
hand geometry
palm print

Behavioral biometrics:

signature
voice
gait (walking style)
typing rhythm

These traits are
- universal (normally every person has these characteristics)
- unique for an individual
- permanent (do not change much)
- collectible (data can be easily acquired).
Among all these, fingerprints and iris are most reliable for human identification which can be used in public places. However, sensors required collect user data are expensive. Also, people often feel uncomfortable to enter such highly secured areas. That is why researchers are looking for non-intrusive biometrics, where data can be collected without even the knowledge of the subject. These includes biometrics like face and gait. But recognizing human using facial images or walking video clips have a number of issues and are not yet fit for large commercial applications.
